Peaceboat the most environmentally friendly ship in the world

Yoshioka Tatsuya, founder and director of Peace Boat, which has sailed the world’s seas since 1983, has announced the construction of the most environmentally friendly ship in the world, to mark the Seatrade event in Fort Lauderdale. Inspired by nature and biomimetic design (the aerodynamic upper shell is inspired by whales, the ship’s coating mimics fish skin), the eco-friendly ship will ensure a 40% reduction in CO2 emissions. With solar panels (12,000 m2) and sails with retractable masts to take advantage of wind energy, this impressive ship, which will be built from 2017, will serve a large number of destinations including the Indian Ocean islands from 2020.

Peaceboat project was welcomed during the COP2 conference and prides itself on producing zero waste.

A nightclub will even make it possible to produce electricity from the kinetic energy produced by dancers on the dancefloor. Collected rainwater and reclaimed wastewater will be used to water vertical gardens. With 760 cabins, 66% of which will have balconies, the ship will be comfortable and environmentally friendly. It will have a capacity of 2000 passengers including 400 crew members. The new Peace Boat will cruise around the world, stopping in a hundred ports on every trip including at least two Vanilla Island ports.

For Pascal Viroleau, Chief Executive of the Vanilla Islands, “the development of tourism must be environmentally friendly. The islands of the Indian Ocean are directly affected by global warming. That’s why, after the Vanilla Islands’ manifesto was presented to Top Résa in 2015, we are supporting this project which combines economic development and sustainable development.”
