The numerous eruptions of Peak of the Furnace, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, have led to the birth of two new peaks : Kei Aki and Kalla and Pelé.
The Kei Aki peak surfaced after an eruption in May 2015. Its name honours a renowned earthquake scientist from Japan who died in an accident in Tampon on the very same day of the eruption, exactly 10 years before.
The Kalla and Pelé peak emerged during an eruption on 24 August this year. The peak gets its name from a well-known figure in the legends of Réunion Island, Grandmother Kalle (or grandmèr Kal in local dialect), as well as the Hawaiian goddess of fire, dance and volcanoes.
The two newborn peaks were officially christened at the Peak of the Furnace, itself a symbolic figure in the eyes of the people of Réunion Island, a major natural attraction of the Réunion National Park and an official UNESCO World Heritage site.
This is an unprecedented event for Réunion Island ; the inauguration ceremony was performed at the rim of a rampart near Rouge Peak, graced by the presence of the President of the Réunion National Park, the President of the Réunion Volcanological Observatory, the President of the Réunion Island Tourism Board and a representative from the National Forests Office.
